26SEP22:  Entries Still Open

Entries are still open for this event.  But we have ordered maps and so have limits to new entries.  PLEASE ENTER PROMPTLY TO BE ASSURED A RUN!

COVID

COVID may seem like a bad memory.  However it is still in circulation and we encourage a continued responsible approach at our orienteering events. People have different risk tolerances and we ask you to respect others’ personal choices, particularly in maintaining inter-personal distance.  Please do not attend if you or a member of your household has COVID-19 symptoms; we will offer a full refund in such circumstances – details at bottom of page.

This event will be SIAC enabled

Parking is limited to 65 cars, so book early to avoid disappointment.  You must order a parking permit when you enter and provide your car registration number.  If there are no more permits available, then unless you can get a lift with someone who has a permit, or plan to cycle there, you cannot enter.  There is no other parking nearby and, being very close to Chequers, the police will not take kindly to cars parked on the roadside.

Directions / Parking

Car park opens from 9:30am.

The farm is located about a mile south of Butler’s Cross. The recommended approach is from the north, via Butler’s Cross, which is about 1½ miles west of Wendover. The approach from the south - on the Missenden Road - has a blind corner when turning right into the minor road leading to the farm and is best avoided.

Beware orienteers walking to the start on this minor road.

Terrain Description

Undulating woodlands with a good path network. There are many large and small earth features such as pits and earth banks in the variable woodlands. There are many woodland boundaries. A few planted woodlands are out of bounds. An area of wet pits in the North-West of the area is also out of bounds as the dry surface is deceptive.

Light Green and Green courses cross the best of the runnable woodlands. The seasonable undergrowth of bracken and nettles is quite high this year but limited to a few areas which can be avoided on your courses. Grass is also higher than usual, surprisingly, so more conspicuous control features will be chosen.

The Map

A4, 1:7500 scale and has been updated in the past few months. Courses generally avoid high summer undergrowth. Symbols are ISOM 2019 x 200%.

Please familiarise yourself with all the map symbols before you start. There are non-IOF green symbols for large fallen trees which fell in the storm last Spring. These symbols are aligned to the direction of tree fall with the root end shown as a solid green oval. Most trees which fell across paths have been cleared or there is adequate space to avoid them. In woodland you will need to deviate around them and the mapped root end is a help to navigation.

Start Times

THERE WILL BE NO ENTRY ON THE DAY. You must pre-enter, via Fabian4 using the link at the top of this page.

Starts will be from 10.15 to 11.45am. 300metres walk from the carpark to the Start. 450m from the Finish to the carpark. (All distances currently provisional.)
Access to Start and Finish requires crossing a minor road, so children should be accompanied.

Courses

YELLOW: 2.0km, 70m climb. Suitable for juniors with some experience or for supervised newcomers, and for family groups.
ORANGE: 2.7km, 80m climb. Suitable for adult beginners and experienced juniors.
LIGHT GREEN: 3.2km, 90m climb. More challenging; for improvers and
those with a bit of experience. Controls are off paths but close to large or linear features.
GREEN: 4.0km, 120m climb. Most challenging. For experienced orienteers.. Significant route choices. As technical as the land permits.

Control descriptions will be on the map only.

For family groups, we recommend the Orange course, or Yellow if you want something shorter.
For juniors, Yellow is a good course, though juniors new to the sport should be accompanied.

Course lengths are straight line distances between the control points. You can expect to run at least 20% more than the stated distances!

How To Enter

Pre-entry only through Fabian4, using the link at the top of this page. THERE WILL BE NO ENTRY ON THE DAY. We are limiting entry numbers because of the restricted parking, so enter early to be sure of your place. And if you are coming by car, you MUST select the number of car park permits you require - hopefully only one! (that's at step 3 of the entry process) AND give your registration number (at Step 3+).

You don't have to be a member of an orienteering club to enter this event. On Fabian4, just show your club name as IND (for Independent)

Small family or other groups are welcome, but please enter only the Yellow or Orange courses. Enter as a Senior. Change your name if you wish, for example to Jones Family.

Pre-entries up to and including Sunday 25th September
- Green and Light Green - BOF members £6, non-members and family groups £8, Juniors & Students £2

The farm shop, mobile café and outdoor seating will be open to you from 10am. Please respect the privacy and peace of other café users and neighbours.
