Planner's Comments
Everything went smoothly on the day and I thank everyone who helped make that happen, as well as the residents of Didcot Ladygrove for not moving any of the 48 controls, many of which were just stakes in the ground.
I wanted to do something a little bit different to the usual urban race so opted to try the double sprint format. I had fun planning 14 different courses on two areas! The courses were deliberately a little longer than the official sprint lengths, with winnings times close to 20 minutes. The extra distance was mainly to get you in to the more interesting parts of the area without the need for multiple starts and finishes, and also allowed for some slightly longer route choice legs. I paid a lot of attention during planning to trying to find legs where one route choice was maybe 5-10 percent better than another. Finish times on most courses were sufficiently bunched that making the wrong call on a few such legs could have cost several places.
One positive feature of the double format was a nice sociable atmosphere on the hill between races, with start and finish close at hand for spectating. Thankfully the weather was almost perfect for enjoying this to the full.
