A message for newcomers and infrequent orienteers

We would be delighted to see you at this and other TVOC events. This event, like all our events, offers a range of courses to suit everyone from newcomers to experienced orienteers. If you are not sure which course to enter, please contact the organiser (contact details at the bottom of this page).

Please note that, if you’re not a member of British Orienteering, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. You’re very welcome to take part, but please be aware that you do so at your own risk. For example, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event, you would not be covered by British Orienteering’s insurance.

Helping

TVOC members – PLEASE contact your team leader to offer to help, or contact the organiser at hannah.redrup@gmail.com. They will give you the discount code to use when you enter.

Directions / Parking

Parking is at Cogges Farm Main Car Park near the Blake C of E primary School and will not be marshalled so please park sensibly amongst the general public. Route to start will be taped.

Any additional cars will need to park in Woolgate Car park. Park with the general public and make your way to Start at Oxlease park (start will not be taped from Woolgate). Please be aware that some areas are only limited to 1hr free parking.

Please be considerate of the general public when parking and crossing roads.

Terrain Description

The courses all start and finish in a small area of parkland and then quickly plunge into the urban landscape of Witney using the complicated network of minor housing estate roads and alleyways. Courses 6, 7 and 8 are tightly focussed on the east side of the River Windrush around the Coggs area of Witney, while courses 1 to 5 branch out to visit the centre of Witney to the West of the River Windrush.  All of the courses are very flat, but with a little more climb on the longer courses.  Roads around the housing estates are generally quite, and even more so on a Sunday.  The roads and car parks around the town centre, whilst still being restricted to 20mph, will be busier.

The Map

The map’s had a lot of work done, an update and an extension – many thanks Bob! – and is ready for orienteers to descend upon it.

Newcomers are welcome! Choose a course shorter than the length you’re comfortable running because the course length is ‘optimised distance’ length and you will run further (and much further if you get lost!).

Unaccompanied under 16s can only enter on courses 7 & 8 which do not cross any major roads. Estate roads with a 20mph speed limit need to be crossed to complete course 7.

Unaccompanied under 12s can only enter on course 8 which has no road crossings. We do recommend that younger juniors are accompanied on their courses.

Other courses will cross roads so runner should take care.

Start Times

Starts will be from 10am – Noon. The start is 5 min walk from the car park.

Course close is at 2pm. Please ensure you have downloaded by then – even if you did not finish.

They also have a lovely cafe (3 on the map) that participants are encouraged to dip into for tea and cake after their run. Otherwise Woolgate shopping centre is only a 15min walk away.

First aid is provided by White Star at assembly. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, please write it in a sealed envelope and hand it to enquiries; it will be destroyed after the race.

Water will not be provided.

Dogs

TVOC’s policy is that dogs are not permitted on courses.
Dogs are permitted in the assembly area.
