Entries

There is a parkrun event in Wendover Woods that starts at 9am for those who may wish to warm up their legs.

Location of Registration and Cafe/Toilets in relation to carpark.  The Start is signed from Registration, and is 100m away. Starts are free flowing at 1 minute intervals.

The above picture was taken a week ago.

The woods are in a good condition, most of the ground cover has died back and lack of vegetation in places gives good sight lines.  This does mean that some of the green on the map is not as green as it was.

The area is a series of linked ridges with some steep slopes,  the steeper slopes are avoided by all but the Green course.

Directions / Parking

Parking in Wendover Woods Carpark. Parking charges apply.

Terrain Description

Undulating Chiltern landscape with some steep slopes, these are avoided by most courses.
A wide and mature path network.
No loose control descriptions, except Green where available in Start Lane.

The Map

1:10000
Control descriptions for the Green course in Start lanes.
Control descriptions for other courses on the map only.

Start Times

THERE WILL BE NO ENTRY AT THE EVENT. You must pre-enter, via SiEntries - see link at the top of this page [not there yet]. We will leave entries open, in theory until the morning of the event - but note that last February's event filled up well before the day of the event.

Starts will be from 10.15 to 11.45am. The Start and Finish are adjacent to the carpark.

IMPORTANT: Courses close at 1pm. You must report to the download tent by 1pm latest, even if you retire or have not finished. The controls will be collected from 1pm onwards

Courses

Final Course Details:
YELLOW: 1.8km and 35m climb. Suitable for juniors with some experience or for supervised newcomers, and for family groups.
ORANGE: 3.3km and 115m climb. Suitable for adult beginners and experienced juniors.
RED: 4.8km (expect to run about 5.5-6km) and 165m climb. Longer, but less challenging navigationally. Ideal for runners new to orienteering. You still need to be able to read a map, but it is more like an unmarked trail race.
LIGHT GREEN: 3.7km and 145m climb. More challenging; for improvers and those with a bit of experience. Most controls away from paths and more route choice options.
GREEN: 5.3km and 240m climb. As challenging as the planner can make it. Only for those with experience at orienteering. More navigation. Watch out for an additional challenge!

YOU MUST REPORT TO THE DOWNLOAD TENT BY 1PM LATEST AS CONTROLS WILL BE COLLECTED IN AT 1PM.

Control descriptions will be on the map only.

If you're a runner trying orienteering for the first time, the Red course is ideal - you will probably run 5km doing it; if that is too much, then Orange might be more suitable.
For family groups, we recommend the Orange course, or Yellow if you want something shorter.
For juniors, Yellow is a good course, though juniors new to the sport should be accompanied.

The THAMES VALLEY JUNIOR ORIENTEERING LEAGUE runs in conjunction with TVOC’s Saturday Series. Wendover is the second Junior League event of 2024. Any junior aged 18 or under who enters this event as an individual and who successfully completes a course on their own (or in a junior pair on the Yellow course only, or who is shadowed by a parent/carer on the Yellow or Orange courses only) will be automatically included in the Junior League standings. Please note that any junior who enters and participates as part of a family group, or other group, will not be eligible for the Junior League. More League details and full rules can be found at https://tvoc.org.uk/junior-league/

How To Enter

Pre-entry only through SiEntries. There will be no entry at the event, and we are limiting entry numbers because of the restricted parking.

You don't have to be a member of an orienteering club to enter this event.

Small family or other groups are welcome, but please enter only the Yellow, Orange or Red courses. You just need a single entry. Enter as a Senior. You will be asked if you are entering as a group - say Yes, and we will arrange a second map for you.
