Event 14 in the Summer Street Series. This event will be somewhat different to the usual Street-O format. Based at the Hill End Outdoor Centre to the west of Oxford, it will use the newly redrawn orienteering map of the area. An ideal opportunity for TVSS regulars to try running on a more detailed orienteering map. Planner: Mark Thompson

The map is at scale 1:4000, much smaller than the usual 1:10000. The area is not big enough for a simple score event, so a novel format will be used: a `dumb-bell score’. There are 38 controls on the map; these are the permanent orienteering course control posts at Hill End. For this event, they are joined in 19 pairs, giving 19 legs which may be run in either direction. Your goal is to run as many of these 19 legs as possible, consecutively, in the alloted time. The time allowed is 45 minutes. You score 10 for each completed leg, and -10 for each minute (or part minute) you are late back.

Example: suppose that 1 is joined to 4, 2 is joined to 5, and 3 is joined to 6. If you run 1,4,5,2,3,6 you have scored all of the legs. This is also the case if you run 4,1,2,5,3,6. If you run 1,5,4,2,3,6 you only score two of the legs (either 1,4 then 3,6, or 2,5 then 3,6) — this is because the legs must be run consecutively, you cannot try and run several legs mixed up at the same time.

We will be using MapRun for timing and for analysis of routes after the event ONLY, because MapRun itself does not implement this scoring system. In particular, note

– You are quite likely to run very near some controls more than once, and MapRun may not beep on the second visit to a control.
– For this reason, to `punch’ a control you should physically touch the corresponding post on the ground. (We will of course rely on honesty here.)
– The score MapRun will assign you will not be correct; we will work out correct scores later.

Entries: Pre-entry via RaceSignUp only, HERE. £3 per entry. Entries close at 14.00 on the day of the event, but please enter as early as possible as this helps with estimating map numbers.

The event will use the free MapRun app. This is available on phone, as well as Apple and Garmin watches. It’s advised to have this downloaded in advance of the event. The event is available to downloaded in MapRun by going to Thames Valley/TVSS/ and the event name starts HillEnd.
The event is not password-protected; if you download it you will see all the control points, but not the 19 legs between them.

Starts will be back to the earlier start window of 6-7pm to allow to get to the hostelry for beers and food afterwards.

The pub is the Seacourt Bridge in Botley.

NOTE that the area is self contained and is suitable for unaccompanied juniors who are capable of running an Orange (TD3) course.
