Terrain Description

This beautiful beech wood has a variety of valleys and contour shapes with a good path network. There are some nice clear runnable areas especially to the North and earth features cover the whole area. There will be new deciduous leaf fall by late November which will make some paths less distinct particularly in the areas of uncluttered vegetation.

Please bring a waterproof, suitable outdoor shoes, and a compass is recommended (also for sale). All competitors must wear full leg protection (ie no shorts). Please bring your own drinks/water.

The Map

Pre-printed at a scale of 1:7500. 5m contours. Size A4.

Map updated in 2023 by Robin Bishop

No loose control descriptions.

Start Times

THERE WILL BE NO ENTRY ON THE DAY. You must enter via SI-Entries - see link at the top of this page.

The assembly tent is adjacent to Kingswood on the Western side of Cock Lane 200m from the school car parking.
Follow the taped route and use the marshalled crossing of Cock Lane. Traffic can travel fast along this road.

Starts will be from 10.15 to 11.45am. The Start and Finish are close to the assembly tent.

IMPORTANT: Courses close at 1pm. You must report to the download tent by 1pm latest, even if you retire or have not finished. The controls will be collected from 1pm onwards.

Courses

Please note the climb when choosing a course.
All course lengths are provisional until courses are finalised.

YELLOW: 2.1km, 70m climb. Suitable for juniors with some experience or for supervised newcomers, and for family groups.
ORANGE: 2.7km, 110m climb. Suitable for adult beginners and experienced juniors.
RED: 4.0km, 160m climb (expect to run more than 5 km). Longer, but less challenging navigationally. Ideal for runners new to orienteering. You still need to be able to read a map, but it is more like an unmarked trail race.
LIGHT GREEN: 3.6km, 145m climb. More challenging; for improvers and those with a bit of experience. Most controls away from paths and more route choices.
GREEN: 4.1km, 170m climb. Most challenging. Only for those with experience at orienteering. More navigation.

YOU MUST REPORT TO THE DOWNLOAD TENT BY 1PM LATEST AS CONTROLS WILL BE COLLECTED IN AT 1PM.

Control descriptions will be on the map only.

If you're a runner trying orienteering for the first time, the Red course is ideal - you will probably run 5km doing it; if that is too much, then Orange might be more suitable.
For family groups, we recommend the Orange course, or Yellow if you want something shorter.
For juniors, Yellow is a good course, though juniors new to the sport should be accompanied.

Course lengths are straight line distances between the control points. You can expect to run at least 20% more than the stated distances!

The THAMES VALLEY JUNIOR ORIENTEERING LEAGUE runs in conjunction with TVOC’s Saturday Series. Any junior aged 18 or under who enters this event as an individual and who successfully completes a course on their own (or in a junior pair on the Yellow course only, or who is shadowed by a parent/carer on the Yellow or Orange courses only) will be automatically included in the Junior League standings. Please note that any junior who enters and participates as part of a family group, or other group, will not be eligible for the Junior League. More League details and full rules can be found at https://tvoc.org.uk/junior-league/
