A message for newcomers and infrequent orienteers

We would be delighted to see you at this and other TVOC events. This event, like all our events, offers a range of courses to suit everyone from newcomers to experienced orienteers. If you are not sure which course to enter, please contact the organiser (contact details at the bottom of this page).

Please note that, if you’re not a member of British Orienteering, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. You’re very welcome to take part, but please be aware that you do so at your own risk. For example, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event, you would not be covered by British Orienteering’s insurance.

This event will be SIAC enabled.

Directions / Parking

Parking is located in Tylers Green Middle School, Cock Lane, High Wycombe, HP10 8DS with kind permission from the school. Parking is limited so please car share if possible.

TVOC marshals will direct you to a car park space.

Terrain Description

This beautiful beech wood has a variety of valleys and contour shapes with a good path network. There are some nice clear runnable areas especially to the North and earth features cover the whole area.

Please bring a waterproof, suitable outdoor shoes, and a compass is recommended (also  available for sale). All competitors must wear full leg protection (i.e. no shorts). Please bring your own drinks/water.

The Map

Pre-printed waterproof at a scale of 1:7500. 5m contours. Size A4.

Map updated in 2023 by Robin Bishop.

Courses

Please note the climb when choosing a course.
All course lengths are provisional until courses are finalised.

CourseLength
(km)
Climb
(m)
Yellow2.185Suitable for juniors with some experience or for supervised newcomers, and for family groups.
Orange3.4115Suitable for adult beginners and experienced juniors.
Red4.9170Longer (expect to run more than 5.5 km), but less challenging navigationally. Ideal for runners new to orienteering. You still need to be able to read a map, but it is more like an unmarked trail race.
Light Green3.3119More challenging; for improvers and those with a bit of experience. Most controls away from paths and more route choices.
Green4.6165Most challenging. Only for those with experience at orienteering. More navigation.
Score23 controls. Find as many as you can and get to the finish within 45 minutes. Controls are worth 10, 20 or 30 points. Lose 10 pts per minute (or part of minute) late.

YOU MUST REPORT TO THE DOWNLOAD TENT BY 1PM LATEST AS CONTROLS WILL BE COLLECTED IN AT 1PM.

Control descriptions will be on the map only.

If you’re a runner trying orienteering for the first time, the Red course is ideal – you will probably run 6km doing it; if that is too much, then Orange might be more suitable.
For family groups, we recommend the Orange course, or Yellow if you want something shorter.
For juniors, Yellow is a good course, though juniors new to the sport should be accompanied.

Course lengths are straight line distances between the control points. You can expect to run at least 20% more than the stated distances!

Start Times

Start times are between 10:15 and 11:45.

The assembly tent is on  Kingswood Avenue about 200m from the car park.
Follow the taped route and use the marshalled crossing of Cock Lane. Traffic can travel fast along this road so children must be supervised.

The start is about 200m and the finish are about 100m  from the assembly tent. If you have your own dibber you can go straight to the start. If you hire a dibber go to the assembly tent first.

IMPORTANT: Courses close at 1pm. You must report to the download tent by 1pm latest, even if you retire or have not finished. The controls will be collected from 1pm onwards.

How To Enter

THERE WILL BE NO ENTRY AT THE EVENT. You must enter via SiEntries – see link at the top of this page.

Please enter by Sunday 11th January if you can, as we are then ordering maps. Later entries are subject to map availability and are at a higher price.

You don’t have to be a member of an orienteering club to enter this event.

Newcomers to Orienteering are most welcome! We have helpers to explain the event, the courses and the map. Come prepared with long running (or walking) trousers and warm clothes.

Small family or other groups are welcome, but please enter only the Yellow, Orange or Red courses. Just one entry will cover your group. You will receive one map. However we recommend you have one map EACH – you can order extra maps (£1 each) when you enter.
