Event REARRANGED for Saturday 29th November

This is the re-scheduled date for the event postponed on 4th October because of Storm Amy.

We hope everyone entered for the 4th October can make the new date.  If not, we will let you know how we will refund you in due course.

Entries have now re-opened for this event as of Mon 6th Oct.

This TVOC event was being held before the annual Bucks Big O Scouting orienteering event.  Our rearranged event will still provide Cubs, Scouts and their families an introduction to orienteering, or an opportunity to develop their orienteering skills.

If any GROUPS are thinking of entering this event, please can they let the Organiser know in advance.

SIAC Card holders (SI air / contactless dibbers, including those hired for this event):  You MUST insert your card and dib at the Clear, Check and Start units.   From then on, all controls, (including the Finish) are in contactless mode, and do not need a physical dib.

Directions / Parking

Parking is in the public car park at Wycombe Rye Lido, off Bassetsbury Lane.  This is the same car park as used by the Wycombe Parkrun.

As the Parkrun finishes, car parking might be tight in the Lido car park.  Alternative car parking can be found here:

Railway Place Car Park, London Rd, High Wycombe HP13 6AB.  See < here >

Layout of car park, toilets, SI Card Collection, Download and route to Start and Finish available below:

Terrain Description

Keep Hill and Deangarden Woods are predominantly runnable deciduous forest along a valley with some reentrant contour detail.  All courses will encounter hills.  Route choices might allow runners to flex the amount of climb on their courses, perhaps +15% to -5% from stated figures.

Some parts of the area are very steep and potentially slippery if wet.  Good grippy footwear will be very welcome.

The Map

Map updated with minor corrections during summer 2025 by Bob and Pattie Beresford (TVOC).  Original map from autumn 2022 by Julian Birkinshaw (TVOC).  Scale 1:7,500, ISOM 2017, A4 printed on waterproof paper.

Courses

Note that the following courses will also be available at this event:

  • Cubs
  • Scouts

These two extra courses will be of similar standard to those encountered at the Bucks Big O event.  It is suggested that Cubs and Scouts who have not orienteered before enter these courses.  Start early to make sure you have returned and finished by 1pm when courses close!

Explorer Scouts and Leaders are welcome to enter the course of their choice.

Course distances are provisional and approximate

White1.4459Suitable for juniors without any experience.
Yellow1.9509Suitable for juniors with some experience or for supervised newcomers, and for family groups.
Orange2.910014Suitable for adult beginners and experienced juniors. Also suitable for family groups.
Red4.015019Longer (expect to run at least 5 km), but less challenging navigationally. Ideal for runners new to orienteering. You still need to be able to read a map, but it is more like an unmarked trail race.
Light Green4.011015More challenging; for improvers and those with a bit of experience. Most controls away from paths and more route choices.
Green4.312017Most challenging that the area will allow. For those with significant experience. Controls often well-away from paths and more route choices.
Score25A fixed amount of time (45mins) to find as many controls as possible. You may go to controls in any order. Points are awarded for each control you find. The score for each control depends on how difficult it is to find. Punative penalties for finishing late!
Cubs3.110517Starts out like the White course above. But then transitions on to become more difficult, like the Yellow course.
Scouts4.015019Starts out like the Yellow course above. But then transitions on to become more difficult, like the Orange course.

Start Times

Start times are between 10:30 and 11:45.  (Note slightly delayed first start to allow Parkrun car park to clear).

The assembly tent will be located in Car Park .

If you have your own dibber you can go straight to the start. If you are hiring a dibber go to the assembly tent first.

Approx. 300m from Car Park to Start.  Approx. 250m from Finish to Car Park

IMPORTANT: Courses close at 1pm. You must report to the download tent by 1pm latest, even if you retire or have not finished. The controls will be collected from 1pm onwards.

We recommend Cubs and Scouts start early to ensure they have time to finish their courses.
