Terrain Description
Coombe Hill is a prominent part of the Chiltern escarpment. Please dress warmly as it will be cold. Courses avoid the steepest slopes. There is a good path network. Please respect fences and do not drop litter. If grazing cattle are present, please give cattle a 20m clearance.The Map
The map scale is 1:7,500, map size slightly larger than A4. Map is recently updated by Rosie Walklin and Mark Thompson. Symbols are ISOM 2017-2 enlarged to 200%. There are some out of bounds areas that must be respected - they are marked on the map with purple hatching.Courses
course detailsWHITE 1.4km 60m climb. Easy course on paths for juniors with some experience, newcomers and family groups. Tapes for 20m between two of the controls where there is no marked path.
YELLOW 2.6km 85m climb. Easy course on paths for juniors with some experience, newcomers and family groups.
ORANGE 3.6km 95m climb. Suitable for adult beginners and experienced juniors. Routes mostly on paths.
RED 5.1km 110m climb. A longer run suitable for adult beginners/improvers and experienced juniors. Routes mostly on paths with two or three exceptions
LIGHT GREEN 3.5km 100m climb. A little more challenging for improvers and those with some experience.
GREEN 4.8km 110m climb For experienced orienteers. As hard as the terrain allows!
SCORE 26 controls. Find as many as you can and get to the finish within 60 minutes. Controls are worth 10, 20 or 30 points. Lose 10 pts per minute (or part of minute) late
Start Times
THERE WILL BE NO ENTRY AT THE EVENT. You must pre-enter, via SiEntries using the link at the top of this page. Subject to still having maps available, we will keep entries open until the morning of the event.If anyone needs help to enter, you are welcome to contact Alun Jones: 07967 605307 alun.orienteering@gmail.com.
On the day, collect your hired SIAC dibber from the TVOC tent.
Starts will be from 10.15 to 11.45am.
There is a 500metres walk from the TVOC tent to the Start. The route to the Start and from the Finish is along a road, so children must be accompanied. Follow tags from the TVOC tent and please cross the road at the taped crossing point .
Courses close at 1pm. All competitors MUST be back at the Download Tent by 1pm, whether finished or not.

How To Enter
Newcomers to Orienteering are most welcome! We have helpers to explain the event, the courses and the map. Come prepared with long running (or walking) trousers and warm clothesEntries up to and including Sunday 5th January
- Light Green, Green and Red courses - BOF members £6, non-members £8, Juniors & Students £2
- White, Yellow, Orange and Score courses - BOF members £5, non-members £7, Juniors & Students £2
Later entries from Mon 6th January through to 11am Saturday 11th January (assuming spaces are still available) - £1 extra
Timing chip hire £1 (essential if you do not own one). Lost timing chips charged at £65.
Control descriptions are on the map only, loose ones are not provided. White, Yellow, Orange, Red and Score have text descriptions; Light Green and Green have symbols only.
Dogs
TVOC’s policy is that dogs are not permitted on courses.Dogs are permitted in the event car park, and you are welcome to walk your dog up on Coombe Hill after your run.
Further Information
This is the first event in the 2025 Thames Valley Junior Orienteering League for anyone aged 18 or under, who is competing on the Yellow, Orange, Red, Light Green or Green course. Full details can be found here.
