A message for newcomers and infrequent orienteers

We would be delighted to see you at this and other TVOC events. This event, like all our events, offers a range of courses to suit everyone from newcomers to experienced orienteers. If you are not sure which course to enter, please contact the organiser (contact details at the bottom of this page).

Please note that, if you’re not a member of British Orienteering, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. You’re very welcome to take part, but please be aware that you do so at your own risk. For example, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event, you would not be covered by British Orienteering’s insurance.

This event is significantly different from all other events in this series. Please read all information once it is uploaded. Assemble 18.00-18.15. Mass start 18.30.

Welcome to the Oxford Street Series! A series brought to you by OUOC in conjunction with TVOC. The aim is to have eight weekly MapRun events based in Oxford, starting on Tuesday 20th January to coincide with the Oxford University term. Many of the events will feature a novel format, and both score and line formats will be used.

Entry: Entries online only here. Entries will close at 14.00 on the day of the event. £3.50 for BOF members, £4.00 for non-members. Oxford University Students run for free. If you are planning on accompanying an under-16 runner, enter yourself and select that you would like an additional map (£0.50). The under-16 runner does not need to be entered separately.

Format: Pacman!

45 minute novelty score course. Briefing 18:15, Mass Start 18:30.

Aim to clear one of three difficulty levels while avoiding the ghosts.

Easy zone – 65 controls, minimum 3 miles (4.8k) to clear. Easy and Medium – 85 controls, minimum 4 miles (6.4k) to clear. Easy, Medium and Hard – 116 controls, minimum 5.5 miles (8.8k) to clear

Your ‘per control’ score increases with difficulty, there is a ‘cost’ to start each zone, and a bonus for finishing it. If you enter but do not complete a zone, someone who clears all the easier zones may score higher. Expect to run further – there will be two ghosts roaming the map acting as moving barriers at a walk / jog pace. They may move towards but not past any moving runners they encounter. You passing them will mean disqualification. You stopping and waiting for them to get bored will mean disqualification too. Turn around, and reroute or they’ll deliberately follow you 🙂

Return to the finish to end your run. Note there is no points penalty for not getting back to the start / finish in time, however no controls will count after 45 minutes.

Score vs Controls visited for numerical order route:

Easy – Controls 101-165 (65 total) 15 points per control, 100 point completion bonus. Medium – As Easy + 201-220 (85 total) 18 points per control, -300 points to enter, 120 point completion bonus. Hard – As Medium + 301-331 (116 total) 20 points per control, -700 points to enter,  100 point completion bonus

Scores will be calculated automatically from downloaded Maprun data. Visiting even a single control from a harder level will trigger the change of scoring, but GPS glitches will not be held against you.

The event will use the free MapRun app. This is available on phone, as well as Apple and Garmin watches. It’s advised to have this downloaded in advance of the event. If running with a phone, make sure it has plenty of charge!

Starts: Assemble: 18.00-18.15. Mass start: 18.30.

Assembly: The race will be based from the Six Bells OX3 8JN. Please hang around afterwards for drink/food!

Important Information: Anyone 16 and under must be accompanied at all times by somebody over 16 due to road crossings. Races will be at night so it is highly advised that head torches and high vis are worn.
