A message for newcomers and infrequent orienteers

We would be delighted to see you at this and other TVOC events. This event, like all our events, offers a range of courses to suit everyone from newcomers to experienced orienteers. If you are not sure which course to enter, please contact the organiser (contact details at the bottom of this page).

Please note that, if you’re not a member of British Orienteering, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. You’re very welcome to take part, but please be aware that you do so at your own risk. For example, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event, you would not be covered by British Orienteering’s insurance.

This event will be SIAC enabled.

Directions / Parking

Directions / Parking

Please use public transport if at all possible. Buses on Banbury Rd stop near the park.

Some parking is in the Pay and Display car park at the end of Harbord Road, Oxford, OX2 8LH. Please note this car park is well used by Parkrun participants on a Saturday morning, but the majority of these generally leave the car park by 10am so there should be more space thereafter.

Terrain Description

Mostly flat city park with numerous man-made features, spread across both sides of the A40. There is also a maturing nature reserve.

The Map

Newly updated by Ben Green to ISSprOM standard.  Scale 1:4000.  Pre-printed, waterproof paper. A4.

The map is split by the Oxford Ring Road.
White, Yellow and Orange courses stay on one side.
Red courses use the southern part of the map, which involves crossing the A40 twice. You MUST use the bridge over the Ring Road.

There is a pond in the competition area passed by all courses. Please instruct any juniors you bring not to go near the pond.

Courses

CourseLength
(km)
Climb
(m)
White1.210Suitable for young beginners.
Yellow1.815Suitable for juniors with some experience or for supervised newcomers, and for family groups.
Orange2.720Suitable for adult beginners and experienced juniors. Also suitable for family groups.
Red5.530Longer (expect to run more than 6 km), but similar difficulty to Orange. Ideal for runners new to orienteering. You still need to be able to read a map, but it is more like an unmarked trail race.

All course lengths are provisional but a good indication of the final distance. Please note these are straight line distances between the control points, and you can expect to run at least 20% more than the stated distances!

Further details on coaching can be found HERE.
